Puglia, affectionately known as Italy's boot heel, is a jewel of wine production. Once known as a place of origin for simple, inexpensive wines, the region has recently become a star in the wine sky. The driving forces of this change are the indigenous grape varieties Primitivo and Negroamaro, which ushered in a renaissance of winegrowing in Puglia and noticeably raised the quality level. As a result, numerous wineries have invested in modern techniques and improved farming methods to keep up with increasing demand.

A prime example of this upswing is the family-run Cantele winery in Guagnano, province of Lecce. Nestled in 85 hectares of picturesque vineyards, the bright white buildings of the Cantele winery are characterized by an enchanting atmosphere. The foundation of this winery was laid in the 1950s by Giovanni Battista Cantele and Teresa Manara, who turned their dream of owning their own winery into reality.

From the beginning, the focus was on the native varieties of Puglia and Salento, especially Primitivo and Negroamaro. These varieties are now at the heart of the company's success, which has been strengthened over the decades through targeted investments. The winemaker couple's children, Lisa, Umberto, Giovanni and Paolo, followed in their parents' footsteps. After extensive studies in marketing, agronomy and oenology, they took over the business and viticultural affairs of Azienda Vinicola Cantele and are continuing their parents' legacy with passion and expertise .
